How many drinks brands are there on Earth? Nobody knows, so we had a go. Here's our best guess, category by category, and how many LlamaPort has found so far. We'll never get them all. We're going to try anyway.

Makers are the wineries, distilleries and breweries. Brands are what's on the label, and there are far more of them: one distillery can make four brands, and co-packers, contract brewers and own labels make thousands more. A brand can sit in more than one row.

How we counted
The LlamaPort numbers are live, from the site, and move every day. The world numbers are guesses, rounded, from what's out there and a fair bit of sucking our teeth. Think we're miles out? Tell us and we'll change them.
- Wine. IBISWorld counts about 80,000 wine producers. Most estates bottle more than one label, and négociants, co-ops and supermarket own labels add plenty more, so we've gone for two and a half brands a maker.
- Spirits. The US alone has about 3,100 distilleries and Scotland about 150; nobody agrees on a world total. Spirits is the land of the co-packer: contract-distilled gins, independent bottlers, celebrity tequilas made at someone else's distillery. So about five brands a maker.
- Soft drinks. Every town has a lemonade, every country has a cola and every hotel bar has a mixer. Our guess, and probably low.
- Beer. Counts run from 19,000 breweries (a 2016 survey) to 75,000 (business databases). We've split the difference, then added the cuckoo brewers who rent other people's kit.
- Ready to drink. Cans and bottles of hard seltzer, premixed cocktails and spirit-and-mixer. Mostly made by distillers, brewers and co-packers already counted above. Our guess.
- Energy and functional. Energy drinks, kombucha, shots and 'functional' sodas. Our guess.
- Cider and perry. From Somerset farms to Asturian sidrerías and American cideries. Our guess.
- No and low. Alcohol-free spirits, beers and wines. Most come from makers already counted above. Our guess.
