Westmalle is a Belgian ale brand from Westmalle, Belgium, founded in 1836.
Trappist monks founded the abbey at Westmalle, near Antwerp, in 1794 and began brewing in 1836. The brewery sits inside the abbey walls and the monks still set its policy, with surplus profit going to other abbeys and charity. Its Tripel, first brewed in 1934, became the template for the style.
